Akin Backers Ask Delegates To Delay Romney's Nomination, Says Baldwin
TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Supporters of embattled U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, Missouri's Republican U.S. Senate candidate , today called on pro-life delegates to the Republican National Convention to delay any Presidential nomination for Mitt Romney until GOP financial support for Akin's candidacy is restored and Romney answers questions about his income from an abortion-related Bain Capital deal.
Troy Newman, president of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, said, "Heaven sent a hurricane to hold off Gov. Romney's coronation, so today we're urging pro-life GOP delegates to abstain from any voting on Romney's nomination until all GOP financial support for Todd Akin is reinstated and details of Romney's income tax returns in connection with Bain's Stericycle investment have been made public."
In July, Mother Jones and the Boston Globe revealed that Romney, long after Romney said he had left Bain, signed SEC documents in connection with a $75 million stake in Stericycle, a medical waste disposal firm that burns aborted fetuses. Last week, Romney and the GOP cut off funds to pro-life candidate Akin in reaction to his media comment that some forms of rape may be less likely to result in pregnancy.
Donna Baer, co-founder of Chicago's Cairis Pregnancy Centers and a mother of ten who supports the nomination delay, said, "I think most people understand that Todd Akin fumbled trying to draw a distinction between consensual sex between, say, a 17-year-old and a 18-year-old, versus violent, forcible rape. Further, most women understand that stress and trauma do indeed impair fertility. And, every pro-life woman knows that an unborn baby, even one conceived through rape, is an innocent, precious human being with Creator-endowed human rights. Is it really OK to kill an unborn child for the despicable crime of the father?"
Steve Baldwin, former GOP whip of the California State Assembly and former executive director of the Council for National Policy (CNP), said, "To Gov. Romney we say, castrate the rapist if you want, but let's not kill an innocent child or cut off good men like Todd Akin. I'd sooner take him or Paul Ryan as our party's Presidential nominee than Gov. Romney. Neither of them would kill a baby for the father's crime, but Romney has supported that and much worse. Besides restoring Akin's funding, Romney needs to reveal his tax return income from the Bain Stericycle deal and tell the truth whether tax-funded abortions from his time as governor fueled Stericycle's smokestacks and Bain's profits. Otherwise, I just don't see how any pro-life Republican delegate could support his nomination. We're respectfully urging all Tampa delegates to exercise their right to conscientiously abstain from Romney on the first ballot"
One of Romney's critics is Cass, a Presbyterian minister and former aid to the late Florida evangelist D. James Kennedy, who authored an essay about Mormonism and racism. Linking it to Akin, abortion and Stericycle, Cass today said, "it really seems Mitt Romney is hiding Bain abortion profits in his tax returns from deals that would make Herod blush. Abortion disproportionately destroys Black and Latino children. It has always been an instrument for racist eugenics. Mitt Romney not only needs to repudiate the racist and anti-Semitic statements in his holy books, he needs to disclose everything in his tax returns about his Stericycle income."
Rabbi Yehuda Levin, former spokesman for the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada and head of Jews for Torah Morality, agrees that Romney's nomination must be delayed or averted. Levin is quoted in the new Amazon Kindle book, DUMP ROMNEY: Why Tampa's Republican Delegates must Dump Romney to Defeat Obama, sent in political memo form to Tampa's GOP delegates and conventioneers. It contends that no delegates are actually "bound" by law or GOP rules to vote for Romney and that delegates should exercise their right to "conscientiously abstain" from Romney on the crucial first ballot.
Cass said, "We fear that Mitt Romney's secret tax returns will show that he has financed and profited, like some ancient priest of Moloch or Baal, from the burning of human babies, from child sacrifice."
