PITTSBURGH, Jan. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is Albert Baker Knoll's statement of candidacy:
Growing up in the Baker Knoll household, the topic of public service was on the menu at every meal. My brothers, sister, and I were each expected to be fluent in the language of serving others. Our mother, Catherine Baker Knoll, taught us at a very early age that public service at its finest truly can make a difference...that government, at its boldest, truly can change lives.
I intend to live up to the values and principles I learned crisscrossing this Commonwealth with a woman whose passion for its people was matched only by her tirelessness in fighting for them.
I intend to use these values and work ethic to take up the fight my mother waged decades ago: the fight to educate our kids, care for our elderly, and provide affordable healthcare to those that need it and a living wage to the working poor.
Confident in my preparation for public office, passionate to tackle the problems before us, and full of optimism in our ability to leave our state better than we found it, I declare my candidacy for Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
To those who believe that the goals I have set for the office of State Treasurer are too bold…that a State Treasurer is nothing more than an investment banker managing money, I say this: Return on investment means little if we don't invest in returns that change lives.
Yes we will be a vigilant steward of the Commonwealth's finances and fight hard every day to maximize returns.
Yes we will oversee the investments of school districts, counties, and municipalities, and pre-audit all state expenditures.
And yes, we will administer our state's college tuition investment program with integrity and transparency.
But if that is all we do, then we are shortchanging the people of this Commonwealth. Every decision I make as Treasurer will be guided by one over-arching principle: Leverage every penny of every asset of this Commonwealth to change the lives of Pennsylvanians for the better. If we do all the rest but fail to leverage our assets in ways that change lives then we have failed.
So I make one pledge to you today: I will fight hard every day as Treasurer to maximize every asset, leverage every penny, and change lives for the better.
Today I ask Democratic voters across Pennsylvania to match my experience, my work ethic, and my passion for our party and its values against any others seeking this office. The love that you showed my mother over her five decades of public service is not what drives me into this race. But it does inspire me to public service, it does inform me on how to be a better person, and it will guide me each day as Treasurer to do as my mother did: go beyond the job description of this office to strike out boldly for programs that make Pennsylvania a better place to educate our kids, care for elderly, and lift the poor out of poverty.
Ambitious, yes. Now let's go out and start fighting to make it happen.
