ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. and WASHINGTON, March 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village, Illinois, and St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, both part of the Alexian Brothers Health System, have been ranked as the top suburban Chicago hospitals by U.S. News & World Report Magazine in their "Best Hospitals in Chicago" list published today.

The magazine lists Alexian Brothers Medical Center and St. Alexius Medical Center as 7th and 8th, respectively, among the 46 Chicago metro hospitals reviewed in the report, placing Alexian Brothers Health System's hospitals ahead of all other community (non-academic) suburban Chicago hospitals on the list, and first behind those already ranked nationally as a Best Hospital by specialty.

The U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals in Chicago" list recognizes hospitals in the Chicago metro area with a record of high performance across 16 key medical specialties based on criteria such as reputation, death rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services when compared to other peer ranked hospitals. Alexian Brothers Medical Center was noted for eleven specialties; St. Alexius Medical Center was recognized as being high performing in nine specialties, the complete list of rankings is available online at:

The new metro area rankings are relevant to a much wider range of healthcare consumers. They are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital. Patients and their families will have a far better chance of finding a U.S. News-ranked hospital in their health insurance network and might not have to travel to get care at a high-performing hospital. To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

"All of these hospitals provide first-rate care for the majority of patients, even those with serious conditions or who need demanding procedures," says Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. "The new Best Hospitals metro rankings can tell you which hospitals are worth considering for most medical problems if you live in or near a major metro area."
