All American Building Systems, LLC Casa Chiara Project Wins 2010 Colorado Sustainable Design Award

ELKHART, Ind., Dec. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Casa Chiara project was selected as the winner of the Colorado Sustainable Design Award in the residential category. All American Building Systems, LLC ("AABS"), one of the nation's largest commercial systems-built builders, built Casa Chiara as an urban infill project developed by Urban Ventures, LLC. Casa Chiara consists of four buildings made up of six residential duplexes and one office building creating a compact environmentally sensitive community for the Sisters of St. Francis in Denver, CO.

The Colorado Sustainable Design Award (CSDA) is a statewide program recognizing outstanding sustainable design in residential, commercial, and civic buildings highlighting people and firms that are designing, building, and planning buildings and communities of the future. A jury of professionals assembled from ColoradoBiz magazine, AIA Colorado, ULI Colorado, and U.S. Green Building Council Colorado select winners demonstrating exceptional sustainable objectives in 10 key areas.

Casa Chiara, designed by renowned architect Michelle Kaufmann, was selected as the winner in the residential category. The ENERGY STAR rated buildings, have a modern look incorporating energy efficient features, such as high performance foam insulation, tankless water heaters, water conserving plumbing fixtures, and solar PV. A passive solar design approach was also taken to make the most use of the sun's energy for the solar panels, as well as reducing the need for electric lighting and air conditioning.

All American Building Systems, LLC was selected as the builder because of the many known benefits of modular construction. AABS' precision framing results in more precise cutting and use of materials with significantly less waste than a site built building. What little waste is generated is collected and recycled; wood cut-offs too small to use on other homes, are gathered and used as fuel to heat our facilities in high efficiency wood burning furnaces; sawdust is collected and made available to farmers as livestock bedding to help minimize the harvesting of trees. Modular construction also has minimal site disruption since over 75% of the construction process is done in the plant. This means less traffic into a job site and less runoff.
