Allergy & Asthma Network to Provide Free Asthma Screenings and Personalized Support at Detroit Community Event

FAIRFAX, Va., Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Allergy & Asthma Network's Trusted Messengers team will join the Detroit Health Department and the Detroit Asthma Collaborative on Saturday, September 19, for a free community asthma awareness event offering education, screenings, and support to help residents better manage asthma and related conditions.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kemeny Recreation Center, 2260 S. Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48217. Community members are invited to meet with health professionals, learn practical asthma management skills, and explore local resources available to individuals and families.

"Asthma continues to disproportionately impact communities across Detroit, especially neighborhoods facing longstanding environmental and health inequities," said Adeela Abbasi, Director of Community Outreach and Health Equity at Allergy & Asthma Network. "Trusted Messengers is built on the belief that when we listen to and work alongside community leaders, we can help families get the tools they need to stay healthy. We're grateful to partner with the Detroit Asthma Collaborative and the Detroit Health Department to bring education and support directly to residents."

During the event, Trusted Messengers educators will provide the following free resources:

• Asthma education, personalized action plans, and one-on-one guidance
• Asthma screenings and lung function checks
• Inhaler technique demonstrations and tips
• Information on asthma support programs
• Referrals to community resources and partner services

Partner organizations will also offer additional health and asthma screenings, along with prevention and wellness resources. Free lunch will be provided to all attendees, and the event will feature raffles, giveaways, and a community ice truck to make the day family‑friendly and fun. Additionally, transportation may be available for individuals with Medicaid; attendees should contact their health plan at least three days before the event to confirm eligibility and scheduling.

The Trusted Messengers Program is a national community health initiative of Allergy & Asthma Network that equips local leaders, educators, and advocates with tools to improve asthma and allergy awareness, reduce disparities, and strengthen community trust in health information.
