HOUSTON, July 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- alliantgroup's Chairman of Agriculture and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns appeared on Adams on Agriculture, a radio show produced by the American AG Radio Network, to discuss the administration's trade policies and the current prospects for passing pending farm bill legislation.

During the segment, Johanns began by commenting on the administration's recent implementation of tariffs and the resulting retaliation from traditional trade partners such as Canada and Mexico. Recognizing that the administration's policies have caused across the board trade disputes, Johanns noted that the impact of these clashes has been particularly hard on the American agriculture sector. When asked to provide his policy insight, Johanns recommended that the administration work closely with its trade partners to find policies that are agreeable to all parties involved and to focus on enforcing those policies once these disputes are resolved.

"I just think that agriculture is in the crosshairs," said Johanns. "My hope is that the administration is doing everything they can to keep the lines of communication open and is willing to work with China, the European Union, Canada, and Mexico [to] work through these issues."

With regard to the farm bill, Johanns was more optimistic and noted that a bipartisan bill had already cleared the Senate Agriculture Committee on a 20 to one vote. Anticipating that the final bill could receive as much as 80 plus votes in the Senate, Johanns indicated that such a strong bipartisan coalition could lead to real momentum when the Senate bill enters into conference with the House version.

"It's looking more likely that we can get a farm bill done this year," said Johanns.
