Alstom signs contract worth over CAN$110 million with Kiewit-Alarie confirming its leadership position in the Canadian hydropower market

MONTREAL, July 8 /PRNewswire/ - Alstom, a world leader in the supply of hydropower equipment and services, has signed a contract with Kiewit Alarie Partnership (KAP) to supply three turbine generator sets to Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Lower Mattagami Project in Northern Ontario. KAP is a partnership between two of the largest construction firms operating in Canada - Peter Kiewit & Sons Co. (Kiewit) and Leo Alarie and Sons Construction Ltd. of Timmins, a subsidiary of the Aecon Infrastructure Group (Aecon) - and is the design build contractor for OPG's Lower Mattagami Project. This contract, worth over CAN$110 million, was booked in fiscal year 2009/10. OPG is one of the largest producers of electricity in North America.

Under the contract, Alstom will supply three hydro turbine generator sets at the new Smoky Falls Generating Station that will replace the existing station, thus significantly optimizing water utilization. When installed, the new turbine generators will have a combined capacity of 267 MW. Smoky Falls Generating Station is one of four stations to be redeveloped as part of OPG's CAN$2.6 billion Lower Mattagami Project.

Under the terms and conditions of this contract, Alstom will design and supply three new generating units, including propeller turbines, vertical generators, static excitation systems, speed governor systems, and protection and control systems. Alstom will provide a complete turnkey package, including installation and commissioning of the units, which is planned for the end of 2013.

Core components such as turbine runners and generator bars will be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, into which Alstom has invested heavily in recent years to address the growing North American hydro market.

Canada is one of the world's largest producers of hydropower electricity with 475 hydropower plants providing more than 71,000 MW. Canadian hydropower supplies 60% of the country's electricity needs and 13% of worldwide hydropower generation each year. Hydropower generation is produced mainly in Quebec, Newfoundland, Ontario, Manitoba and British Colombia.

With a long history of experience in Canada, Alstom has been involved in many other projects such as Pine Falls (Manitoba Hydro, 2009/10), Shipshaw Unit 5 (Rio Tinto Alcan, 2009/10), R.H. Saunders (OPG, 2009/10), and recently signed a contract with Hydro-Québec for La Romaine II (2010).
