AmCham China Delegation to Raise Market Access Concerns, Press Case for Bilateral Investment Treaty During Washington Trip

BEIJING, April 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Chamber of Commerce in China is sending a large delegation to Washington, D.C. in late April to discuss with administration officials and legislators the business environment for its members and press the need for a high-quality U.S.-China Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). During the visit, AmCham China will also co-host with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce its annual Washington conference featuring several renowned speakers.

Led by AmCham China Chairman James Zimmerman, the delegation of business leaders representing American companies in China will visit senior officials from the Departments of State, Commerce and Treasury, as well as the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and members of Congress. They will provide updates on China's economic transition and reform agenda, raising concerns about how regulatory enforcement and recent rules on high-tech equipment disadvantage American companies, and pressing the case for the BIT.

"China is very important to U.S. business, with billions of dollars' worth of trade and investment flowing between the two countries each year," Zimmerman said. "China is now undergoing a radical economic transformation, and conflicting internal views of the country's future are hampering our members' ability to compete on a level playing field. It is crucial for the administration to stand firm in defending the right of our companies to fair and impartial treatment as China engages more deeply in the global economy."

Coinciding with their visit will be the 2015 China Business Conference, which will be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on April 27-28. The conference will bring together businesspeople, senior current and former administration officials and leading China hands from the private and non-profit sectors. Panels include U.S. and Chinese Roles in the Digital Economy, Key Policy Issues in U.S.-China Economic Relations, and Projecting the Chinese Economy and Opportunities for U.S. Business to 2017.
