American Federation of Teachers Endorses Walt Helmick for Agriculture Commissioner
CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia has endorsed Walt Helmick in his race for Commissioner of Agriculture.
"We support Walt's position of leveraging West Virginia's public and higher education systems to help foster economic development and improve the agricultural industry," Judy Hale, president of AFT-WV, said. "As a member of the Legislature, Walt has been a great proponent of tying together agriculture and education to improve our economy."
Helmick said, "The education system is key to job creation in agriculture and other industries. We must develop more job-training programs for agricultural industries. Just as I have done in the Senate, I will continue to advocate using the education system to promote agriculture."
A Webster County native, Helmick graduated from Webster Springs High School and received his B.A. degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology. He is also a graduate of the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.
