Federal income-driven repayment plans (IDRs) can make student loans more manageable in the long term and may be more useful for people who can't take on a side hustle for a short-term payoff of their debt. IDRs calculate monthly payments on income and family size, which can greatly reduce payments. After a 20- to 25-year term, any balance left is forgiven.
