American Geophysical Union Launches Free Science News Website
Eos, Newspaper of the Earth and Space Sciences, Moves to Online Format
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Geophysical Union (AGU) today announced the transformation of its flagship print newspaper, Eos, into a robust, dynamic and openly accessible online publication—Eos.org. The new site will focus on providing the latest Earth and space science news, continuing Eos' 35-year tradition of excellence.
Eos.org will also provide expanded feature and opinion content, as well as blogs and special series, and extensive coverage of trends and other issues influencing the Earth and space sciences. It will offer all the amenities online news consumers expect – including commenting; simple, topic-specific navigation; the ability to share content across a variety of networks; and a designated Twitter feed, @AGU_Eos, to highlight content from the site and news from around the world. Additional features and functionality are also being planned and will launch throughout 2015.

But in this age of accelerated news cycles and on-the-go access via digital media, we recognized that a print-only publication was no longer the best way to serve the needs of our community," said Chris McEntee, executive director and CEO of AGU. In addition to the new website, the print edition of Eos is also undergoing a transformation. Through the end of 2014, the newspaper will be printed in its existing weekly tabloid format. Then, starting in early 2015, it will transition to a twice-monthly magazine designed to serve as a companion to Eos.org, as opposed to simply a printed version of the site. This new magazine will also be available through Eos.org.
In keeping with AGU's mission to promote discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity, Eos.org will not be targeted solely to AGU members. Instead, it will be written for all members of the Earth and space science community, including those working in academia, and the government and private sectors, as well as those in related and allied fields. As such, the site will be accessible free of charge.
