America's Promise Alliance Adds Two National Non-Profit Leaders, Lomax and Barrow, to Board of Directors
WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- America's Promise Alliance, the nation's largest network dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth, announced today that Joe Louis Barrow Jr., former CEO of The First Tee, and Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF (United Negro College Fund), have been elected to its board of directors. Each will serve a three-year term, effective January 2018.

Barrow joins the board of America's Promise after serving as president and CEO of The First Tee. He previously served as an Alliance Trustee of America's Promise for many years. For 17 years, Barrow guided The First Tee, a youth development organization that uses golf as a platform to build character and provides young people with after-school and in-school educational opportunities. Under Barrow's leadership, The First Tee's network of local chapters grew exponentially and the National School Program evolved from a pilot project to full implementation in thousands of elementary schools across the country impacting millions young people.
Since 2004, Lomax has led UNCF, the nation's largest private scholarship provider to African American students and a leading advocate of college readiness. With Lomax at the helm, UNCF has raised more than $2.5 billion and helped more than 92,000 students earn college degrees and launch careers. Along with serving on the America's Promise board of directors, he also serves on the boards of Teach For America, the KIPP Foundation, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
