Anesthesia Stability May Be Masking a New Set of Risks for Hospitals

NorthStar reports a threefold increase in Dallas–Fort Worth partnership evaluations as hospitals confront the need for more adaptable anesthesia programs

IRVING, Texas, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- After years of post-pandemic disruption, the anesthesia market has experienced a welcome period of relative stability. But that stability may be giving hospital leaders a false sense of security, according to NorthStar Anesthesia, one of the nation's leading anesthesia care providers.

As staffing pressures have eased and operations have normalized, some hospitals and health systems have felt less urgency to reevaluate their anesthesia partners. Yet the underlying demands on those programs remain anything but static. Shifting surgical volumes, changing market dynamics and unexpected increases in patient demand can quickly expose the limitations of an anesthesia model built around yesterday's needs.

NorthStar is already seeing signs of renewed activity. In the Dallas–Fort Worth market alone, the company is evaluating three times as many potential hospital partnerships in the fourth quarter of 2026 as it did in the first quarter.

While the increase reflects NorthStar's own partnership pipeline rather than the broader market, it underscores how quickly the environment can change, and why hospital leaders cannot afford to mistake stability for permanence.

"One of the things we've observed over the past year is that the relative stability in anesthesia staffing has reduced the urgency for hospitals to reconsider their existing arrangements," said Adam Spiegel, CEO of NorthStar Anesthesia. "But stability today doesn't guarantee stability tomorrow. We're already seeing a meaningful shift in activity in some markets. The hospitals that are best positioned won't necessarily be those that react fastest when something changes. They'll be the ones that have built the flexibility to respond before a disruption becomes a crisis."

When demand changes, anesthesia must be able to respond

NorthStar's experience across its hospital partnerships illustrates how quickly anesthesia requirements can evolve, and why adaptability has become an increasingly important consideration for hospital executives.

At Mercy Health Perrysburg Hospital in Ohio, the closure of a nearby emergency department contributed to a doubling of emergency department volume, creating additional demands on hospital operations and anesthesia services. NorthStar worked with the hospital to scale anesthesia support in response to the changing patient population and procedural needs.

In Texas, Texas Health Mansfield faced a different challenge. Following a transition from its previous anesthesia provider, NorthStar helped rebuild and expand the hospital's anesthesia program, growing the clinical team from one anesthesiologist and three CRNAs to one anesthesiologist and nine CRNAs. Since NorthStar assumed the program, important results have been achieved:

• Surgical volume has increased by nearly 20% year over year
• The hospital has expanded and added service lines, and 
• The hospital is preparing to add a surgery center and two additional operating rooms. 

Though the circumstances differ, both examples illustrate the same operational reality: anesthesia capacity cannot be treated as a fixed resource in an environment where hospital demand is constantly evolving.

"Anesthesia is deeply interconnected with nearly every aspect of hospital performance, from surgical throughput to emergency services to growth in procedural volume," said Josh Lumbley, MD, MBOE, FASA of NorthStar Anesthesia. "When demand changes, hospitals need an anesthesia partner that can  deploy resources and adapt the care model without compromising quality or operational performance. That kind of agility doesn't happen overnight. It has to be built into the partnership from the beginning."

The time to build agility is before it's needed

For hospital leaders, the implications extend beyond avoiding staffing shortages or service interruptions. An anesthesia program that cannot adjust to changing demand may also limit an organization's ability to capitalize on growth opportunities, expand procedural services or respond to shifts in its local market.

NorthStar believes the recent period of relative stability presents an opportunity for hospitals to take a more proactive approach to evaluating anesthesia performance.

Rather than waiting for a contract expiration, staffing crisis or operational disruption, hospital executives should consider whether their current anesthesia model has the flexibility to meet changing needs.

"The question hospital leaders should be asking isn't simply whether their anesthesia program is working today," Spiegel added. "It's whether that program can support what the hospital will need six months or two years from now. Markets change, patient demand shifts, and opportunities emerge quickly. Anesthesia should be an enabler of that change, not a constraint."
