APIC 2015: DebMed® Showcases Line-up of Hand Hygiene Solutions for Increased Patient Safety and Reduced Costs

As several Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality programs now include direct measures for hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), DebMed continues to expand its solutions to support hospitals' growing need to increase hand hygiene compliance, reduce infections and maximize financial returns.

In 2014, CMS began reducing Medicare payments for hospitals that ranked the worst performing based on the number of HAIs. More than 700 hospitals across the country have seen reductions in their Medicare payments by one percent since being notified. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on any given day, about one in 25 hospital patients acquires an HAI, many of which could have been prevented if proper measures were taken, and which cost an average of $21,800. Furthermore, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), within which CMS operates, has announced its three programs to reach the goal of tying 85 percent of all traditional Medicare payments to quality or value by 2016, and 90 percent by 2018. Quality measures around readmissions and HAIs are woven into all three programs.
