Hospital-grade air disinfection technology now available for homes, schools, offices, and healthcare facilities - integrating directly into existing HVAC systems
TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Photonix today announced the commercial launch of ViroZap®, the first FDA-cleared, Class II medical device engineered for in-duct air disinfection. Unlike standalone air purifiers, ViroZap integrates directly into new or existing HVAC systems, delivering continuous, whole-building air treatment without the need for room-by-room units.
ViroZap was developed by Dr. Yogi Goswami, Distinguished University Professor at the University of South Florida and a member of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame.
Proven Performance, Third-Generation Technology
Built on third-generation plasmonic photonic technology, ViroZap treats recirculated air continuously and at low energy cost. The device does not use UV-C light, which can cause retinal damage and burn the skin. Some UV-C systems also produce ozone, which can irritate the lungs. ViroZap uses safe, UV-A light and does not produce ozone.
At an airflow rate of 500 CFM, independent testing confirms:
- 99.9995% reduction of airborne RNA/DNA viruses
- 99.9997% reduction of airborne bacteria (gram-positive and gram-negative)
- 99.995% reduction of mold and fungal spores
- Rapid VOC detoxification, with no ozone byproduct
Engineered for Real-World HVAC Integration
ViroZap is compliant with ASHRAE 241 and ASHRAE 170 standards and is pressure-drop neutral, operating seamlessly with our proprietary coated MERV 13 or 15 filters and a MERV 8 pre-filter. A HEPA filter coating option is also available, upon request. The system scales from single-family residential installations to large hospitals, schools, commercial buildings and institutional HVAC systems.
"ViroZap represents a fundamental shift in how we think about indoor air quality — from filtration alone to active, continuous disinfection at the source," said Terry Murray, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Applied Photonix. "With FDA clearance as a Class II medical device, we're able to bring hospital-grade air safety to the spaces people spend the most time in: their homes, schools, offices, and of course, healthcare facilities."
Availability and Partnership Opportunities
ViroZap is now available for commercial deployment. Applied Photonix is actively seeking distribution and installation partners across the United States and internationally to support growing demand across residential, commercial, education, and healthcare markets.
