SAN RAMON, Calif., Nov. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans are turning to alternative medicine and health practices in droves. As of 2016, for example, 36 million people practiced yoga. And it's not just downward dog that's sweeping the nation—Americans receive acupuncture, get biofeedback treatments, see a chiropractor, or move, eat, or drink their way through a variety of other alternative health practices. The Financial Education Benefits Center will offer a membership benefit that allows eligible members to access discounts on a variety of popular alternative medicine treatments.
"Alternative medicine is so common these days, the term is almost ironic," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at the Financial Education Benefits Center. "So we wanted to give our members a benefit that makes sense in today's world. People are practicing yoga; they're turning to treatments they feel are more natural. These are routine for a lot of people, but they can cost a lot. That's where the benefit comes in."
Because alternative medicine is by its nature outside of the mainstream medical establishment, treatments may not be covered by health insurance. If alternative treatments are covered by a certain carrier, there might still be a co-pay. And if a person wants to seek treatment on a regular basis, this can translate to steep costs. For example:
- Chiropractic sessions cost an average of $65.
- Acupuncture runs an average of $75.
- An average biofeedback session can cost between $35 and $85 dollars.
- Yoga classes, when practitioners don't go to classes that are included in their gym membership, usually cost between $9 and $23 per class.
According to Martinez, using the FEBC membership benefit will be easy. Once the benefit is available, eligible members will be able to search for participating alternative medicine providers online or by phone. After locating a provider that works for them, members present a membership card at their appointment to receive a discount.
"The goal here at FEBC is to make these kinds of treatments easier on your wallet," said Martinez. "You may already be familiar with alternative medicine. Or maybe you're just interested in it as an option for you or your family. This upcoming benefit is going to save you something no matter where you are in terms of alternative care."
Alternative medicine isn't just popular, but it may be growing in general. Yoga is a big factor in that growth, jumping from 20 million practitioners in 2012 to the current 36 million. Overall, alternative medicine has shown some upward trends since 2002. FEBC predicts more growth in the world of alternative medicine and hopes to make these alternative care options more affordable by offering discounts to interested members.
