Ashworth College Instructor Dr. Nicole Detling Miller Appears on 'Colbert Report'
NORCROSS, Ga., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Nicole Detling Miller, U.S. Speedskating Olympic team sports psychologist and sports psychology instructor for Ashworth College, appeared as a featured guest on The Colbert Report, yesterday, February 1st, 2010.
Host Stephen Colbert has been a major supporter of U.S. Speedskating, having aired several TV segments highlighting his many attempts to 'make the team'. In a recent segment, he received the honorary title of assistant sports psychologist, and announcing Dr. Detling Miller as his new 'boss'. On yesterday's show she presented him with an award naming him an official team member.
"We're very proud of the fact that one of our instructors is affiliated with U.S. Speedskating and representing our country during the Vancouver Winter Games," stated F. Milton Miller, Ed.D, Ashworth College Vice President of Education. "Nicole's expertise in sports psychology is certain to support the team's efforts in bringing home the gold!"
While the Salt Lake City resident will be mostly behind the scenes, her contributions will be evident as U.S. Speedskating athletes compete in both long and short track Olympic events. As sport psychologist Dr. Detling Miller will serve as the team's "mental coach", ensuring athletes maximize their performance and overcome any confidence, composure, anxiety and distraction issues. She joined the team in 2008.

A U.S. Olympic Team veteran.
Dr. Detling Miller is a veteran of the U.S. Olympics, having served in a similar capacity for the U.S. Ski Team. "The goal is to have athletes performing at their peak," she said. Because of her involvement with both U.S. Speedskating and Ski teams, she will be able to share the successes of athletes from both teams.
The valuable coaching that she gives her athletes could mean the difference between winning an Olympic medal and just missing out. This is particularly true for those competing in multiple events and needing to quickly 'switch gears'. "By the time athletes reach the Olympics they are comparable in terms of skill, physical ability, and nutrition," she explained. "What gets them to the podium is how well they've prepared themselves mentally."
