Consoli outlines three tips for reducing data center energy costs while increasing the accuracy of data center audits. 1. Hit on energy savings. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) completed a recent study that highlighted the problem of "zombie servers," where up to 30 percent of servers may no longer be needed, have become forgotten or misplaced while remaining plugged in and consuming energy. One way to eliminate or minimize zombie servers is via a clean data center audit based on high-accuracy IT asset management solutions, rather than manual record keeping.
2. Stand on data center temperatures. Rather than overcooling data centers by eliminating "hot spots," today's data center professionals recognize that newer technologies are capable of operating at higher temperatures. Now data center teams focus on eliminating "cold spots" by matching different types of equipment with their optimal temperature range. By tagging and tracking the placement of each data center asset by the operating temperature it requires, power and cooling can be applied more effectively.

Tracking end of life information and locations for hard drives and other storage devices through passive RFID can provide an accurate audit trail for what happens to storage devices that leave the data center for disposal.
