Attorneys For Victims In Las Vegas Massacre Ask Judge To Block Shooter's Family From Controlling His Estate
A Team of Lawyers from California, Texas and Nevada, Including The Nettles Law Firm, Ask Court to Stop Stephen Paddock's Family Attorney from Taking Charge of Paddock's Millions
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lawyers representing victims in the Las Vegas Massacre filed an objection in Probate Court to block Stephen Paddock's family from taking command of Paddock's estate, valued at more than 5 million dollars.
"We object to anyone associated with the shooter's family, or an attorney of their choosing, from being able to gather the shooter's assets, hold them, and determine how they are disbursed," said attorney Alice Denton of Denton Cho Law Firm. "We are asking the Court to hold the shooter's assets in trust and preserve and protect them for the victims."
Alice Denton, Jarien Cho, James Lee, and Craig Island are part of the team that filed the objection to block Paddock's family attorney from controlling his estate.
"It's crucial that an independent, 3rd party hold the funds," said attorney James Lee of Lee Murphy Law Firm. "It's what had been proposed earlier, but Paddock's family asked the court for control, so we had to step in."
"The conflict of interest is over the top," added attorney Craig Eiland of The Law Offices of A. Craig Eiland. "The attorney who represents Paddock's family and who wants to be named Administrator of Paddock's estate also represents the father of one of the people killed in the shooting. You can't do both. We see that as a clear conflict of interest."
"In death, Paddock should not be free to leave his wealth to whomever he chooses," said attorney Catherine Lombardo of The Napolin Law Firm. "He should pay the victims' families, the medical bills of those who were shot and the other damages he caused to all the 22,000 people who ran for their lives that night."
The team of attorneys who filed the objection to the Paddock family attorney, Jonathan Barlow of Las Vegas, being named estate administrator will head back to court Friday at 9:30 to move their position forward.
The team of attorneys are among the first to file suit against Paddock, and MGM, alleging proper security would have prevented the mass shooting. They are asking anyone with information related to the shooting, including victims, security or event staff, to please call them at (702) 706-0904.
