Author Says Key to Relationships Is in You, Not Your Partner

Well-known religion, psychology and philosophy author Anthony O. Nwachukwu, Ph.D., Psy.D., says his newest book, "Keeping Human Relationships Together: Self Guide to Healthy Living [Studies in Spiritual Psychology vis-a-vis Human Values]," is just that: a guide for supervising oneself in order to create and maintain fulfilling relationships.

Many of his previous books explored how religion affects one's life and human interactions. This time, Dr. Nwachukwu goes beyond Christianity or religion to reach out to anyone, even atheists, who is involved in relationships - which is all of us, he says. "Since 'relationship' is basically 'life,' we are our own relationships."

While other self-help and religious authors have promoted the need to keep relationships healthy, this book goes to the illusions and assumptions that prevent individuals from achieving that goal. Referring to "spiritual psychology," the author shows readers how to begin not by blaming current and potential partners, but by searching inside themselves.

"You can't expect your partner to be honest when you are selfish and greedy, or to keep an honest relationship with a person you deceive," Dr. Nwachukwu says. "It is one thing to tell an unreliable husband to stop deceiving himself, his wife or family, but another to find out why he has such a bad habit and to give him the skills he needs to heal his problem from its root."

Dr. Nwachukwu's insights are based on systematically developed and tested surveys he conducted in West Africa and the United States. He grew up in Nigeria, where, he says, "The solidarity and brotherly love I enjoyed in my community are unimaginable."

The Roman Catholic clergyman moved to New York in 2003 to bring his ministry to America. Through individual relationships, Dr. Nwachukwu hopes to improve U.S. society and the world as a whole.

Anthony O. Nwachukwu, Ph.D., Psy.D., is professor of Counseling Psychology and West African Studies and chairman/head of the New York City Ph.D. Thesis Defense Panel. His areas of research, writing and teaching are ethics, religion, spirituality and psychology.

Dr. Nwachukwu, a Nigerian, taught at Bigard Memorial Major Seminary, an Affiliate of Urban University, Rome, and at St. Peter Claver and Mater Ecclesia seminaries in Nigeria. Ordained a priest in 1987, Dr. Nwachukwu served as pastor for 13 years and published several works of scholarship in Nigeria.

He holds a bachelor of arts with honors in Divinity and Philosophy from Bigard, a post-graduate diploma in Educational Technology and a master of Educational Philosophy from Imo State University, a master of Divinity from the Catholic Institute of West Africa, a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Federal University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and a doctorate in Psychology from the Graduate Theological Foundation/Oxford, which awarded him the Dorothy Day Prize in Pastoral Care and Counseling in 2008.

A certified member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, he has served the New York University Medical Center for more than seven years and holds the first "Safety Team Award" from the nursing department ever given to a Chaplain there. He also is a retreat moderator, first assistant administrator of Mater Ecclesia Diocese, a theological vicariate examiner, and a judge in the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal (Ahiara, Nigeria). He has published more than 13 books since 1982.
