AVID successfully prepares underserved students - predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged - for college
SAN DIEGO, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Despite severe economic challenges for public schools, AVID* will welcome more than 20,000 teachers and administrators to one of eight AVID Summer Institutes, held in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, Sacramento, and San Diego during this school summer vacation period.
"Never has our work at AVID been more critical," stated Jim Nelson, AVID's executive director. "As we enter the Summer Institute season, we remain committed to outstanding professional development with the knowledge that it is the best way to achieve our mission of closing the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society."
Educators will participate in sessions focused on teaching critical thinking skills as well as study and organization skills and on giving students support they need to succeed in rigorous coursework. They will learn how to implement AVID strategies that prepare students for college and postsecondary success, and they will plan with their school site teams for the coming school year.
The highlight of each Institute occurs when participants hear current AVID students tell their personal story of overcoming struggles and hardships and share their current plans for the future. These stories motivate and inspire the entire audience.
