Avocado Green Mattress Partners With 1% for the Planet To Plant 48,250 Trees, Fund Women's Center In Rwanda
Sustainable mattress company donates 1% of all 2018 revenues to environmental nonprofits
HOBOKEN, N.J., Jan. 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Avocado Green Mattress, an e-retailer of natural and sustainable sleep products, has partnered with 1% for the Planet to make strides on global environmental issues. 1% for the Planet is an international organization whose business members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental nonprofits. Their mission is to build, support and activate an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet.
"1% for the Planet business members serve as important catalysts for long-term environmental sustainability; they support nonprofits on the front lines all over the world, tackling the urgent issues facing our planet. We're grateful for Avocado Green Mattress for engaging in our movement and driving real positive change," said Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet.
"It's inspiring to see the resulting work of a year-long partnership; we believe the collective action of responsible businesses can help change the future of our planet."
Through this partnership, Avocado Mattress contributed to twelve different national and international environmental nonprofits in 2018—selecting a new cause each month. In October, the featured nonprofit was Kula Project, a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating poverty in Rwanda through the development of entrepreneurs. As a result of the month-long alliance, Avocado Mattress was able to fully fund the development of a Kula Women's Center in Rwanda.
"We are so proud of the work we will accomplish through our partnership with Avocado Mattress," said Sarah Buchanan-Sasson, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Kula Project.
"Kula Project was founded on the belief that poverty is not a lack of money, but a lack of opportunity. We believe that if organizations invest in the ideas and businesses of people living in poverty, together, we can change the future. We are grateful that Avocado Mattress believes the same. This partnership will not only change the lives of the women of the Coko Women's Center, but the lives of their children, and that's when an unimaginable future becomes a reality."
In April, in honor of Arbor Day, Avocado Mattress selected the Arbor Day Foundation. As a result of their donation, the Arbor Day Foundation planted 48,250 trees to assist in cleaning the air and water, slowing climate change, and preventing species loss.
Their May partner, as voted by Avocado Mattress employees, was the Bee Girl organization. Bee Girl is a nonprofit on a mission to educate and inspire communities to conserve bees, their flowers and our food systems. As a result of the partnership, Bee Girl restored 100 acres of highly degraded pastureland into lush fields to provide habitat for bees, regenerate soil, conserve water and sequester carbon.
Other nonprofits included the New York-based City Harvest—which helped rescue 220,000 pounds of food waste that was delivered to New Yorkers experiencing food-insecurity, the Social Plastic Foundation, the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy (OVLC), and Blue Planet.
"We are a mission-driven and responsible company that sees our environmental and activist work as an essential piece of our company DNA," said Avocado Mattress Co-Founder and CEO, Jeff D'Andrea.
"We hope to make even greater strides in the environmental and social causes we care about in 2019 through our alliance with 1% for the Planet."
