AXA Equitable Airs Fourth Episode in 'Retirement Reality Show' Series
New York City Marathoners Talk About Reaching the Retirement Finish Line
NEW YORK, Nov. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company released today the fourth in a series of "Retirement Reality Show" videos exploring the attitudes, behaviors and experiences of Americans as they prepare for and live through retirement.
"In the Long Run," is set against the backdrop of the ING New York City Marathon. More than 45,000 participants tried to go the distance in front of two million live spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers – an apt backdrop to explore how people feel about planning for the financial long haul.
Matt Klein of AXA Equitable's External Affairs team, running in (and completing) the marathon for the fifth consecutive year, carried a flip camera with him this year to ask runners at the staging area on Staten Island about their strategies for reaching the retirement finish line.
"The world converges in New York City on the first Sunday of every November for one of the largest international long-distance running events in the world," said Klein. "Whether it's a 26.2-mile marathon or a retirement that may last several decades, careful planning and preparation is critical to succeed."
The Administration on Aging reports that 39.6 million people in the U.S. were 65 years or older in 2009, the latest year for which data are available. They represented 12.9% of the U.S. population. By 2030, about 72.1 million will be 65-years old or more.(1)
"For many individuals, the potential for a retirement that spans more than 30 years is a looming reality," said Klein. "We're trying to get people comfortable with discussing their challenges in preparing for that possibility."
AXA Equitable's "Retirement Reality Show" video series complements the company's ongoing research and thought leadership programs on the issues surrounding retirement and serves as a platform for taking the public's pulse on financial risks and preparedness. The purpose of the series is to learn firsthand what real retirement savers and retirees are thinking and doing.
