Back To School Donations One Month After Devastating Fire Brings Students A Great Start To The School Year

HOUSTON, Aug. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On July 29, 2015 a massive fire destroyed 60 homes in the Gentry House apartment complex, located in the Spring Branch neighborhood of northwest Houston. Dozens of families escaped with their lives and nothing else. Many of those families included elementary school children who, just one month later, were starting a new school year. For some of the younger children, it was their first experience with school. 

Starting a new year in school can be stressful enough, but for many of the children who lost everything in the fire, their families are trying to put their lives back together. Buying back-to-school clothing and supplies is a challenge.  Terry Bryant Accident & Injury Law understands how hard it is for victims of devastating circumstances such as a fire to get back on their feet. The firm approached Edgewood Elementary School and offered to donate backpacks and other school supplies to the children.

"Victims of a devastating fire, such as the Gentry House residents experienced, are left feeling completely drained," states Bryant. "We wanted to give these children an opportunity to feel good about themselves and get a positive start as they walk into a new school year."

The night of the fire, the school opened its doors as a Red Cross shelter. Many of the families who lost their homes came into the building with nothing.  "Most of the homes were completely destroyed by water and smoke damage and the families walked out with nothing," states Assistant Principal Cindy Gardner. "With all that these parents had to deal with, not having to get school supplies for their children is just one less thing on their plate that they have to worry about."
