Bacon Plumbing Heating Air Electric Urges Homeowners to Prepare HVAC Systems for Colder Weather

Fall maintenance can help homeowners catch heating problems before the first cold snap

DALLAS-FORT WORTH METROPLEX, Texas, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Bacon Plumbing Heating Air Electric encourages homeowners to schedule heating maintenance before colder weather arrives in the coming months. A system that worked well last winter may have developed worn parts or airflow problems since it was last used, and homeowners may be completely unaware of these issues until it becomes inconvenient or even too late to call someone for help.

Homeowners often wait until the first cold night to turn on the furnace or heat pump, only to find that the system won't start or can't keep the house comfortable. A maintenance service during fall can reveal problems while there's still time to arrange service without the pressure of an urgent breakdown.

A professional heating inspection is a good place to start. A technician can check key components, test system operation, assess airflow and flag parts that need repair. Furnace inspections should include appropriate safety checks, while heat pump maintenance should confirm that the equipment operates properly in heating mode. Homeowners should mention unusual sounds, inconsistent temperatures or a recent change in energy use during the visit.

Air filters also deserve attention before the system begins running regularly. A dirty filter restricts airflow and can make it harder to heat the home evenly. Check the filter and replace it when needed, following the manufacturer's guidance. Then make sure furniture, curtains and rugs do not block supply registers or return vents. These simple checks can help prevent airflow issues from being mistaken for a failing heating system.

If certain rooms always feel colder than others, turning up the thermostat may not solve the problem. Leaky ducts, gaps around windows and doors, inadequate insulation or blocked vents can all affect comfort. Homeowners can look for obvious drafts and note which rooms stay cold. If the problem persists, a technician can evaluate ductwork and airflow to find out whether heated air reaches the rooms as intended.

Homeowners should test the thermostat before relying on it throughout the winter. Raise the setting a few degrees above the current room temperature and check that the system starts and delivers warm air. Replace thermostat batteries if needed and review programmed schedules. If the system cycles on and off frequently, struggles to reach the set temperature or does not start, the cause could involve the thermostat, wiring, sensors or heating equipment.

It's also worth checking for drafts and duct leaks before cold weather sets in. Weatherstripping and caulking can help close some accessible gaps around doors and windows. Duct leaks in attics, crawl spaces or garages may need professional attention, since heated air can escape before it reaches living areas. Homeowners should never block required ventilation openings or seal areas that need proper airflow for safety.

A system that needs frequent repairs, struggles to heat the house or delivers uneven temperatures may deserve a broader evaluation, especially if it's older. A technician can explain the system's condition and help compare the likely cost of another repair with replacement options. Planning ahead gives homeowners time to make an informed decision instead of choosing equipment in the middle of a heating emergency.
