BHCC to Continue College Course Offerings at Malden High School

BOSTON, June 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College and Malden High School will sign a memorandum of agreement at the College on June 15, 2010, to continue offering college courses at Malden High School.  Under a pilot program last year, 532 students enrolled in BHCC credit courses during the evening at Malden High School.  There were 68 Malden High School students who completed courses at the satellite and the Charlestown campus, earning both high school points for graduation and college credits.

"The partnership between Malden High School and BHCC has been a great success because it provides convenience for residents and a more seamless transition for high school students to college," said BHCC President Mary L. Fifield, who will join Malden Mayor Richard C. Howard, Superintendent of Malden Public Schools Sidney Smith and Dana Brown, Principal of Malden High School, for the June 15 signing.

BHCC provides scholarships to high school students through the State's Dual Enrollment Program and funds set aside by BHCC to create opportunities for high school students to earn college credits.  During the 2009-2010 academic year, 195 students from 18 Boston area high schools, in addition to Malden, earned college credits by taking BHCC courses.  The College also has satellite programs in East Boston, Boston's South End and Somerville.  

"BHCC is very pleased with the success of this partnership," said Donna J. DeSimone, Interim Dean of Academic Support and College Pathway Programs. BHCC and Malden High School are planning to expand the number of courses available to students at the high school during the coming academic year.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 11,700 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.
