Uniting industry leaders to build the digital standards and infrastructure needed for the future of drug development
DOVER, Del., Oct. 6, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Digital CMC Consortium today launched as a new industry collaboration uniting biopharmaceutical organizations, biotech firms, CDMOs, technology providers, and consulting experts around a singular goal: the end-to-end digitalization of Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC).
Established with participation from leaders at Novartis, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Takeda, Rockwell Automation, Flagship's Pioneering Medicines, Stellix, ZS Associates, and QbDVision, the Consortium's mission is to turn formerly static CMC knowledge into reusable, interoperable digital assets that improve speed, quality, and operational and regulatory confidence. To accelerate therapy development, the Consortium is integrating existing industry guidelines and building new standards to fill remaining gaps. Alongside this, the group is developing the tools and code needed to translate these standards into practical, digital-first workflows that organizations can adopt and use immediately.
"The pharmaceutical industry has already been successful in digitizing discovery and clinical trial workflows. Now we have the opportunity to bring that same level of transformation to CMC," said Consortium Chairman, and Chief Business Officer with QbDVision, Mike Stapleton. "Global supply chains and modern regulatory frameworks have grown increasingly complex. Through this collaboration, we can solve the interoperability challenge and build the structured, contextualized data foundation required for AI: ultimately, we will enable businesses to work together in the seamless, digital ways we expect in our everyday lives."
While pharmaceutical science advances rapidly, the CMC phase remains tethered to manual, document-based ways of working that treat PDF tables as the source of truth. Upgrading this legacy infrastructure removes a major bottleneck, accelerating the delivery of life-saving therapies to the patients who need them urgently.
"We've come together to cooperatively build the future of CMC and to encourage implementable, end-to-end digital standards that are ready now," said Achim Frauenschuh, Co-Chair of the Consortium, and Associate Director Science and Technology Drug Substance Development at Novartis. "By reducing duplicative efforts and drawing on expertise across the industry, the Consortium can facilitate immediate access to structured data models, standardized templates, and implementation guidance, helping them put standards into practice and directly achieve ROI."
After a successful first year, the Consortium, a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit, is moving from proof of concept to industry-scale adoption, beginning with frictionless tech transfer between sponsors and CDMOs. While this immediate focus solves ecosystem and internal operational challenges, the ultimate goal is to connect the dots across the entire CMC lifecycle including digital twins, knowledge management, automated content authoring, and artificial intelligence. By growing as a collaborative group, the Consortium will serve as a coordinated industry forum for technical engagement with health authorities, providing robust standards that work for both internal operations as well as regulatory submissions. With work on digital tech transfer and an interoperable exchange of standardized technical data and artifacts currently underway, companies that join the Consortium today will shape the industry's standards for the next decade and benefit the entire ecosystem.
