Bloomberg Law Survey Finds Nearly Half of Attorneys Report Worsening Well-Being

New report examines the impact of work-related pressures, gaps in support, and the disproportionate effects on women attorneys

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 23, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly half of attorneys say their overall well-being has worsened since the beginning of 2025, according to a new survey from Bloomberg Law.

Based on responses from more than 1,100 legal professionals, primarily attorneys at all levels within law firms, the survey found that more than half have experienced disrupted sleep, anxiety, worsened mood, and a reduced ability to focus that they attributed to work-related issues. Attorneys who said their well-being had significantly worsened since the beginning of 2025 reported higher rates of nearly every well-being issue measured, including anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep.

The report also identifies notable differences in the experiences of women and men. Although women and men were equally likely to be caregivers overall, women were more likely to have made career choices they otherwise would not have made because of caregiving responsibilities. They were also more likely to care for parents.

"This survey shows that work-related stress is taking a real toll on attorneys, particularly women," said Cesca Antonelli, editor-in-chief, Bloomberg Industry Group. "The findings give legal employers clear data to assess whether the support they provide is meeting the needs of their workforce."

While many employers offer resources intended to address these challenges, half of respondents said they do not take advantage of well-being support when it is available through their workplace. Among attorneys who participated in professional or executive coaching programs, three in four said they found them valuable.
