Bowden Eye & Associates First North Florida Ophthalmology Practice to Utilize LipiFlow Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Bowden Eye & Associates, a leading Florida eye services provider, today becomes the first Ophthalmology practice in the North Florida region to offer the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System, a medical device that treats Evaporative Dry Eye by liquefying and evacuating obstructions in glands located in the eyelids.
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) affects more than 23 million people worldwide. Studies in the United States have shown approximately 70 percent of visits to ophthalmologists and optometrists are addressing some complaints that can be related to dry eye. With society's increasing reliance of electronic devices (smart phones, computers, video games, etc.), people blink less and experience dry eyes more frequently and at younger ages.
"I saw a tremendous need for the LipiFlow device in that, as a corneal specialist, I see a lot of patients with symptoms of dry eye," says Dr. Frank Bowden, founder of Bowden Eye & Associates. "There have been clinical trials to validate its benefit and that has led to the FDA approval for the use of LipiFlow in the treatment of dry eye caused by lid margin disease."
The new LipiFlow System is the only FDA approved diagnostic & treatment system for Dry Eye Syndrome. This unique system combines visual imaging to diagnose a patient's dry eye syndrome as well as a treatment which applies painless heat and compression to unclog the meibomian glands. This uses a single-use eyepiece to relieve blockage of all the meibomian glands, both upper and lower.
"Approximately 75 percent of patients who have had LipiFlow treatment showed improvement within two weeks," said Bowden.
If left untreated, dry eye can lead to larger vision health issues such as increased discomfort such as burning, itchy eyes, cell damage to the eye's surface, and eventually visual degradation.
