Brazil sees growth even in the midst of crisis: Torneio CrossFit Brasil increases number of registered participants by 43%
SAO PAULO, June 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Starting this coming June 11th, the CrossFit Brasil Qualifying Finals will begin, regional qualifying events for the Torneio CrossFit Brasil (CrossFit Brasil Tournament), the main event for this sport in the country.
The events are organized by CrossFit Brasil, with sponsorship from Reebok Brasil, For Time Fit Equipamentos and Progenex Suplementos. There is also support from Rocktape, CrossX, Auraclara, Sao Paulo Ortopedia and PR Newswire.
There are 765 registered competitors, divided into 8 Regional Qualifying Finals. Each one of these qualifying events has a predetermined number of openings for the national Tournament, determined by the number of official gyms in each region and athletes' performance at earlier events.
"For this year, the main new feature will be the inclusion of a group with up to 10 Master competitors (over 40 years of age) for both women and men, classified by the General Ranking of the Qualifying Finals," says Thales Antoniolli, organizer of the CrossFit Brasil Tournament.
The 6 trials that will decide who qualifies for the CrossFit Brasil Tournament have already been announced, and combine elements of Olympic Weight-lifting, or "LPO" (levantamento de peso olimpico), gymnastics, as well as trials focusing on athletes' cardiorespiratory endurance.
"Year by year, the technical level of the competitors keeps increasing, and it is becoming necessary for the loads and movements for these trials to be thought out very differently from last year," explains Joel Fridman, technical director of the event and owner of Brazil's first affiliated gymnasium.
The number of official gyms in the country exceeded the level of 580 units this week, making Brazil the 4th country in the number of official gyms for this sport, trailing only the U.S., Canada and Australia.
"In spite of the economic crisis besetting this country, the number of official gyms just keeps on growing, thereby proving that this sport really is here to stay. In 2015 alone, there were more than 200 new affiliated centers in Brazil," adds Thales.
The organizers are ready to announce the second edition of CrossFit Brasil Summer, equivalent to the national for teams in this category. "This week we will have decisive meetings with a number of Mayors so that we can bring back the event with the most conditioned teams in the country between December of 2016 and January of 2017."
