ESSEN, Germany and SAO PAULO, April 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Elster (NYSE: ELT) announced today that Light S.A. (Light), a private utility providing electricity to the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has selected an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution from Elster to help increase energy efficiency, conserve resources, empower consumers and enhance distribution to customers currently without electric service.
Between March and July 2011, Light plans to deploy 20,000 Elster Garnet units. Each secure Garnet unit contains configurations of 12 single-phase Elster residential electric Smart Meters, connection and disconnection relays, input and output terminals, a gateway GPRS modem and RF communications and networking capabilities.
The system will integrate with home area networks, providing customers with increased control and additional service options.
The Garnet unit has sophisticated built-in security features and is housed in an all-weather stainless steel case that can be mounted high on an electric transformer pole or in a secure cabinet in locations such as apartment complexes.
"Elster has an established track record of providing reliable, high quality solutions to Light and the strong confidence we have in Elster and in their Garnet solution with our AMI project will allow us to improve the quality and accuracy of the data we collect, and deliver significant customer service benefits, from remote connect/disconnect to home area network management. This partnership is one of the actions from Light on its efforts to modernize networks and combat losses," said Jose Geraldo de Souza Pereira, Superintendent of Light.
"As Brazil modernizes its electric grid to support its growing population and dynamic economy, and prepares for major upcoming global events including the Olympics and World Cup, we are delighted to expand our long-standing relationship with Light as they continue to demonstrate leadership in delivering the benefits of AMI to their customers," said Frank Hyldmar, executive vice president, Elster Electricity International.
