Breckenridge High School Wins Minnesota Suicide Prevention Student Video Competition
Students will be recognized at the Girls' State Basketball Tournament on Thursday, March 18 at Target Center
MINNEAPOLIS, March 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE), the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are pleased to congratulate Breckenridge High School, winner of the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Student Video Competition. The school will be recognized at the MSHSL Girls' Basketball Tournament during a special halftime presentation at the 2 p.m. game on March 18, 2010.
The competition is the culmination of a two-year, state-wide suicide prevention public awareness campaign produced by SAVE and funded through a grant from MDH. The awareness campaign included public service announcements, education materials and technical training programs. Suicide is a public health crisis that is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among 10-24 year olds in Minnesota.
Breckenridge was selected from a field of 13 participants representing schools throughout Minnesota. The video produced by Breckenridge was chosen by a review committee comprised of experts from the field of suicide prevention and representatives from SAVE and the MSHSL. The 6-minute video was selected for its overall production quality and for its outstanding depiction of students taking action to identify a suicidal classmate and taking the proper steps necessary to help their friend.
The video will be distributed as a public service message and made available to high schools in Minnesota through the MSHSL. A preview of the video is available on the SAVE website www.save.org. The full video is scheduled for release on March 22th.
Students and advisors from Breckenridge High School and Tom Brock, Director of Marketing and Communications for SAVE, will be available for interviews during the MSHSL Girls' Basketball Tournament at Target Center on March 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Tom Brock at 952-946-7998 ext. 15 or [email protected].
