Bruce J. Sangeorzan, MD, Installed as AOFAS President

ROSEMONT, Ill., Oct. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bruce J. Sangeorzan, MD, professor of orthopaedics and sports medicine at the University of Washington, Seattle, has been named president of the 2,100-member American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). In addition to leading the Society as president, Sangeorzan will also serve on the board of directors of the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Foundation.

Sangeorzan will focus much of his term on strategic development of the Society, whose members specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system of the foot and ankle.

"Over the last 25 years the AOFAS has grown fourfold and matured into a vibrant international community of dedicated orthopedic surgeons," Sangeorzan said. "The staff and board are committed to providing members with educational resources and ways to assess the best diagnostic and treatment options for our patients."

Sangeorzan earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He also completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Wayne State. He completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal trauma at the University of Washington and then stayed for an additional fellowship in adult foot reconstruction with Sigvard T. Hansen Jr., MD, before joining the faculty there.

Having recently stepped down from his role as chief of orthopaedics for Seattle's Harborview Medical Center and vice chair at the University of Washington, Sangeorzan serves as director for the RR&D Center for Excellence in Limb Loss Prevention and Prosthetic Engineering for the Department of Veterans Affairs, also in Seattle, and is a deputy editor of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Sangeorzan's involvement with the AOFAS has been extensive. Along with four years of board service to date, he has participated in symposia, served as a faculty member for numerous AOFAS courses, contributed as a member of several committees and presented primary research at AOFAS meetings over the last 20 years.

Sangeorzan also has received the prestigious AOFAS Roger A. Mann Award for Best Clinical Paper.
