Bureau Veritas Certification Taking Leading Role in Promoting New Energy Use Certification: ISO 50001

HOUSTON, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ISO 50001 is the new global energy standard, developed to improve energy management systems and increase efficiency in energy consumption. Released in June 2011, it provides organizations a way to take an active role in fighting global warming and to respond to economic constraints in a new global market. Since organizations cannot control energy prices, government policies or the global economy, many companies are looking to reduce energy use and demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development.  ISO 50001 presents a comprehensive approach to smart energy use, allowing companies to reduce their consumption and take advantage of renewable energy technologies.  

Based on the management system model, ISO 50001 provides a recognized framework for integrating energy performance into a company's management practices, and can be implemented individually or easily integrated with other management systems such as ISO 9001. Bureau Veritas Certification has been active in the development of ISO 50001, serving on the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO PC242, the committee that developed the Energy Management standard.  To help ensure that resources are in place to support this standard, the North American office of Bureau Veritas has been hosting training courses, with the next one planned for September. Perhaps most notable is the recent distinction of being the first registrar to certify a company under the ISO 50001 standard: the Thermal Power Station of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. in Dahanu, India.  Since implementing its Energy Management System, the Dahanu Thermal Power Station has experienced significant benefits according to Mr. Rajendra Nandi.
