Bush Library and Museum Announces Schedule of Fall Education Programs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Register now for an exciting line up of historical storytelling education programs this fall at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.

The free programs are for youth and adult learners and are offered in a variety of formats, including on site and through distance learning.

"We're looking forward to presenting a variety of great educational programs this semester, including new programs such as 'The Making of a Global President: The China Diary of George H. W. Bush.' These interactive programs will engage youth and adult learners," said Dr. Shirley Hammond, Bush Library and Museum Director of Education.

The fall education programs include:

Creative Drama and Storytelling Workshop for Adults 
Date: Sept. 25, 2014
Time: 1:30-5 p.m.
Location: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum Classroom
Free. For adult learners

Barbara Hailey, professional storyteller and author, leads sessions about selection and dramatic creation of historical figures. She will strengthen storytelling programs through dramatic emphasis and organization. Costumes and props will be discussed. Also, it will be a helpful preparation for teachers and storytellers to engage audiences of all ages with a focus on our youthful audiences.

The Making of a Global President: The China Diary of George H. W. Bush 
Date: Oct. 10, 2014

Free. For grades 8 and up, including adult learners

Learn from the diary of George H. W. Bush, 41st President of the United States, about one of the most formative periods of his career. As head of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing from 1974-1975, Bush witnessed high-level policy deliberations and daily social interactions between the two countries. The presentation is by Dr. Jeffrey A. Engel, Director of the Center for Presidential History at SMU.

Prevent Bullying: Be Confident and Determined!

Anti-bullying is encouraged by this instructive curriculum about key values of confidence and self-assurance. Join us for an educational program featuring Barbara Hailey, professional storyteller and author, who encourages self-awareness. She provides a road map to develop self-esteem and excitement for reaching goals! Learn how President Bush as a teenager helped prevent a young child from being bullied.

Humorous Family Poet

Wayne Edwards is a comic poet who brings his humorous poetry to life. Through discussion of the three R's of rhyming verse – Rhyme, Rhythm, and Repetition – he helps inspire interest in both reading poetry for pleasure and writing one's own as a form of art. His humorous illustrations of poems engage and delight all ages. Join us for laughter and enjoyment of poetry! It will inspire creating poems.

Texas A&M University Chemistry Road Show

A Thanksgiving Parade: The Historical Tapestry of Gratitude

The program will provide a parade through history from the Puritans and Native Americans to modern times examining various traditions and stories related to the Thanksgiving holiday and the custom of giving thanks. Primary sources from the Bush Library and Museum will show examples of presidential and personal expressions of gratitude.
