Business Leader Salutes Sec. Salazar's Gulf Visit
National Black Chamber President thanks Interior Chief for taking steps to end moratorium
WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Interior Department Administrator Ken Salazar heads to the Gulf today to discuss the new Marine Well Containment System, and what it means for resuming Gulf drilling. National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) President and CEO Harry C. Alford commented on this new development.
"It's great that Secretary Salazar has finally acknowledged the oil and gas industry's considerable steps to strengthen spill containment capabilities following BP's 'entirely preventable' disaster in the Gulf. Hopefully this new system will be the necessary assurance to finally end the ongoing economically destructive drilling ban, since numerous reports pointing the finger directly at BP's poor management has not wavered the Administration's commitment to the policy," said Alford.
"The moratorium has cost the region over 20,000 jobs, and small businesses with limited resources cannot continue to draw on savings to keep their doors open," said Alford. "Further delays in ending this 10 month long moratorium threaten to have long-term effects on the Gulf economy, and the thousands of businesses supported by oil and gas exploration. Thank you, Secretary Salazar, for giving this matter your attention."
