The leading Detroit heating experts say updated technology works efficiently even in very cold climates and is also eco-friendly

"But one of the best things about heat pumps is that they can also cool the air in the hotter months," she said. "Heat pumps pick up heat from the outside and transfer it to the inside during the winter, but do the opposite during the summer. That means that homeowners don't have to have both an air conditioner and a furnace. Heat pumps are an all-in-one alternative."

Hottle said heat pumps can save the average household about $500 a year on their utility bills.

Hottle said the only downside is that heat pumps can cost more to install because they require specialized equipment and, in some jurisdictions, may require additional permitting.

"Like traditional air conditioning units, heat pumps use refrigerant to run properly, even in winter," she said. "If you decide to have a heat pump installed, make sure your contractor is licensed, certified and understands how to properly install a heat pump."

Hottle said that because heat pumps use refrigerants to run, all new residential and light commercial heat pumps are subject to the new 2025 regulations and will require the new A2L refrigerants.
