Guida C&A "Let's take Bio Cotton to everyone every day"

Nonostante la crescente domanda dei mercati internazionali, la produzione globale di cotone organico continua a diminuire. Questo sta avendo ripercussioni ecologiche, sociali ed economiche negative per tutte le parti coinvolte nella catena di distribuzione globale del cotone organico. In rapporto alla produzione mondiale di cotone, la quota odierna del cotone organico è soltanto dell'1%.

Per C&A Europa, azienda impegnata nello sviluppo della produzione di cotone organico già da 10 anni, contrastare questo passo indietro rappresenta un'assoluta priorità.

Thorsten Rolfes, Head of Corporate Communications Europe, spiega: "Allo stato attuale, siamo giunti al punto critico in cui la domanda di cotone organico supera l'offerta. La conseguente incertezza minaccia di compromettere gli investimenti a lungo termine nel cotone organico".

La produzione mondiale di cotone organico aveva fatto registrare un aumento costante fino al 2011, tuttavia, negli anni successivi, i raccolti sono diminuiti dell'8%, nonostante il 50% dei paesi produttori avesse incrementato la propria produzione. Tra le cause di questa regressione si segnala, ad esempio, la mancanza di conoscenza dei metodi per la coltivazione biologica e la mancanza di collaborazione tra le comunità.

Per richiamare l'attenzione su questa problematica, C&A ha pubblicato la guida "Let's take Bio Cotton to everyone every day" che, oltre a spiegare in modo dettagliato il valore aggiunto e le sfide attuali della coltivazione del cotone organico, mostra altresì le opportunità per tutte le componenti della catena di distribuzione globale. È qui che, secondo C&A, risiede la profonda responsabilità delle aziende operanti nel settore dell'abbigliamento.

Sebbene alcune marchi si siano già attivate in tal senso, la crisi della produzione dimostra che bisogna fare molto di più. "Tuttavia, le aziende possono fare la differenza non solo nei paesi in cui producono, ma anche nei loro mercati di vendita, sensibilizzando i propri clienti sul tema del cotone organico. La nostra esperienza ci insegna che è possibile aumentare la consapevolezza, soddisfare la domanda e contemporaneamente realizzare un profitto".

Attualmente, C&A è il maggior acquirente di cotone organico e nell'anno 2013 ha venduto oltre 100 milioni di prodotti realizzati in cotone organico, registrando una crescita significativa rispetto all'anno precedente. La percentuale del cotone organico nell'intera collezione di capi in cotone è del 38%. Il cotone organico lavorato, coltivato senza l'ausilio di pesticidi o di fertilizzanti artificiali, proviene per il 75% da progetti di sviluppo agricolo sostenuti dalla C&A Foundation, di cui beneficiano circa 60.000 coltivatori in India. I programmi sociali e ambientali dell'azienda sono a favore delle comunità che risiedono nei territori dove avvengono le coltivazioni con l'obiettivo di migliorarne le condizioni di vita. In tal senso, sono stati realizzati progetti d'irrigazione a goccia, di fornitura di sementi biologiche, nonché di formazione per i coltivatori e altri importanti partner coinvolti nella catena di distribuzione.

Anche la CottonConnect, azienda indipendente fondata da C&A in compartecipazione con Textile Exchange e Shell Foundation, aderisce a questi principi. L'obiettivo della "CottonConnect" è quello di conferire, attraverso la collaborazione con 22 venditori al dettaglio nel commercio tessile e marche di moda, una struttura più sostenibile alla catena di distribuzione globale del cotone organico. I profitti ottenuti sono totalmente reinvestiti.

C&A si è posta l'obiettivo di realizzare l'intera collezione di capi in cotone coltivato in modo sostenibile entro il 2020. Contemporaneamente, la C&A Foundation sostiene molte iniziative volte a promuovere la coltivazione biologica e a migliorare le condizioni di vita dei coltivatori. In collaborazione con la CottonConnect, la Fondazione ha organizzato il primo tavolo di lavoro "Organic Cotton Roundtable" in India per incoraggiare gli stakeholder a discutere e cercare soluzioni condivise per dare risposta alla diminuzione della produzione.
