CAIR: U.S. Muslims to Mark Anniversary of President's Cairo Address
National Muslim leaders will assess impact of historic outreach effort, offer policy recommendations
WASHINGTON, June 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, June 4, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and other national Muslim organizations will hold a news conference in Washington, D.C., to offer an assessment of the impact of President Obama's June 4, 2009, Cairo address in which he called for a "new beginning" in relations between the United States and Muslims worldwide.
The American Muslim leaders will also offer policy recommendations based on what has or has not been accomplished in the past year.

In his Cairo speech, President Obama called for an end to the "cycle of suspicion and discord," noted Islam's contributions to universal values, acknowledged the contributions Muslims have made and continue to make to our nation, and committed his administration to work with American Muslims to ensure that they may fulfill their religious obligation of charitable giving.
He also set a new tone for American policy in the Middle East when he emphasized that America would not turn its back on "the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity and a state of their own" and that "the United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements."

At Friday's news conference, the Muslim leaders will also discuss Israel's recent attack on a humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza, and how the president's reaction to that attack may affect the administration's outreach efforts.
"The anniversary of the president's speech in Cairo offers an opportunity not only for an assessment of its impact, but also for an evaluation of what remains to be done to carry out the positive agenda outline in that historic address," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.
