Organization working to improve street safety for people of all ages and abilities endorses 12 exceptional candidates committed to completing a separated bike network
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Cambridge Bicycle Safety (CBS), an organization promoting street safety for people walking and biking in Cambridge, Massachusetts, announced its Cambridge City Council candidate endorsements for the November 4th election. CBS is proud to endorse 12 candidates, all of whom have committed to the organization's number one priority: completing the city's network of separated bike lanes—the Cycling Safety Ordinance (CSO) network—on schedule by November 2026.
In spring 2024, a slim majority of the Cambridge City Council voted to delay installing critical safety infrastructure, including separated bike lanes, by 18 months. Just a few months later, three people were killed biking on Cambridge streets. The Council then reversed the delay, but the vote had already set projects back. Many safety projects were delayed by at least a year, a reminder that these urgently needed safety improvements can be obstructed by an unsupportive council. It's critical that in 2025, Cambridge elects a City Council that supports life-saving infrastructure.
All CBS-endorsed candidates have committed to completing the bike network by its November 2026 deadline in the questionnaire CBS distributed to candidates, and are strong choices for voters who care about street safety. Nearly two-thirds of all candidates running this year pledged to complete the bike network on schedule, an overwhelming show of support for these life-saving improvements. This broad consensus mirrors voter sentiment: in the last election, more than 60% of Cambridge voters cast their first-choice ballot for a CBS-endorsed candidate.
CBS named Burhan Azeem (incumbent), Marc McGovern (incumbent), Jivan Sobrinho-Wheeler (incumbent), Sumbul Siddiqui (incumbent), Ayah Al-Zubi, Dana Ray Bullister, and Ned Melanson "Bike Champions," and Patty Nolan (incumbent), Cathie Zusy (incumbent), LaQueen Battle, Peter Hsu, and Stan Rivkin "Bike Supporters." The seven "Bike Champions" not only pledged to complete the bike network on time; they also gave the strongest responses to other transportation-related topics in CBS's questionnaire, and, if incumbents, had a perfect voting record on bike safety.
Everyone deserves to be safe on our streets. Kids going to school, commuters cycling to work, and neighbors running errands all deserve safety, dignity, and peace of mind. Cambridge voters who want safe streets must elect councillors who are committed to the completion of planned bike and pedestrian safety improvements.
In addition to completing the core bike lane network—which will make cycling a safe and comfortable transportation option—this election, CBS is also prioritizing redesigning high-crash intersections with proven safety tools, and transforming neighborhood streets into calmer, low-traffic places that prioritize people over cut-through traffic.
More information about CBS' endorsements and candidates' full responses to the questionnaire can be found here.
The election is November 4, and the deadline to register to vote in Cambridge is October 25.
Early voting begins October 25, and the deadline to request a ballot by mail is October 28. Voters can learn more by visiting https://cambridgema.gov/election.
