First-ever report shows 'Luna' is by far new pet parents' No. 1 choice

WESTMINSTER, Colo., March 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of National Puppy Day on March 23,  Camp Bow Wow, a leading dog day care and boarding provider, is releasing its first-ever list of the top puppy names, based on its database of four-legged Campers aged 4 months to 1 year.

Leading the pack in 2025, Luna ruled as the top puppy name in 18 states, surpassing the next closest contender, Daisy, by nearly 50%.

Second-place Daisy was the most popular name in Kansas, Kentucky and Maine, and third-place Charlie led in Georgia and Illinois. Rounding out the top 10 puppy names, in order, are Milo, Cooper, Lucy, Penny, Bella, Teddy and Winnie.

It's no coincidence that all the top puppy names are two syllables. According to Camp Bow Wow's Animal Health and Behavioral Expert Erin Askeland, M.Sc., CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, short, two-syllable names are helpful in getting a pup's attention during training and socialization.  

"Luna has been going strong for four years as the top dog name, and our data shows it's still a number one choice for new pet parents," said Askeland. "Choosing the perfect name is only the first step in starting pups off on the right paw in life, along with socialization, skill building and enrichment to ensure a healthy and joyful future."

Askeland provides the top puppy training and socialization tips for 2025:

• Ensure a pup gets a balance of exercise, mental stimulation, socialization and sleep. A well-rounded day can help stave off boredom or stress-related behaviors. 
• Keep at-home training and socialization sessions bite-sized. Integrate short, positive training sessions during daily household activities such as preparing meals, vacuuming, doing laundry, making the bed, etc. Regular sessions throughout the day allow training without setting aside long time blocks.
• Observe your puppy closely during house-training. Take them outside every time they show signs of needing to eliminate, such as circling or sniffing, to teach them how to tell you when they need to go out. 
• Supervise. Until a puppy can be trusted not to destroy a home, do not allow them to roam around alone. Provide a designated space where they can have fun safely without causing any damage. 
• Stick with it for up to two years. Dog brains aren't fully developed until 18-24 months. Consistent training and socialization are vital building blocks for a joyful life as they continue through adolescence.
