Canada Focus of May 12 Meetings on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC
MINNEAPOLIS, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Wednesday, May 12, Canada's Minneapolis-based Consul General, Martin Loken, will meet with Members of Congress from the Upper Midwest in Washington, DC. This annual event brings the heads of Canada's diplomatic offices across the United States to the Capitol for dozens of meetings with lawmakers to focus on the vital economic ties between our countries, so essential for creating jobs on both sides of the border; 8 million US jobs depend on trade with Canada.
"I'm looking forward to talking with Members of Congress about jobs and the economy, and the necessity of ensuring Canada and the United States continue to work together to create opportunities to grow our closely intertwined economies," said Loken. "I'm delighted to be accompanied by private sector representatives to underscore how the commercial ties between our countries create jobs and opportunities for all."
"The recession took a terrible toll on millions of people in both countries," said Canada's Ambassador to the US Gary Doer, who will lead the Canadian delegation. "Canada and the United States must work together to strengthen our integrated economies. If the US-Canada border were closed today, 8 million jobs in the United States of America would be negatively impacted."
Joining Loken on the Hill will be representatives of Canadian companies with significant activities in the Upper Midwest: New Flyer Industries, which has bus assembly facilities in Crookston and St. Cloud, MN, and TransCanada PipeLines, whose existing and proposed oil and natural gas pipelines throughout the Upper Midwest form a significant part of the answer to the nation's energy needs.
Loken, Canada's senior representative in the Upper Midwest, will meet lawmakers from North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Canada's Consulate General in Minneapolis also covers the state of Nebraska.
Canada is by far the Upper Midwest's #1 export market and largest foreign supplier of oil, natural gas, and electricity. Over the past three years, annual goods trade between the region and Canada has averaged over $28 billion. Well over 300,000 Upper Midwest jobs are supported by Canada-US trade.
Located in Minneapolis, Canada's Consulate General works to promote trade and investment links, to engage citizens and decision-makers on matters of shared interest, and to assist Canadians living and traveling in the US. 2010 is the 40th anniversary of the Consulate General's presence in the Upper Midwest.
