TORONTO, June 1, 2015 /CNW/ - Bestselling author and New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell will be among those honoured at this year's sold-out Canadian Journalism Foundation Awards, taking place June 3 in Toronto at The Fairmont Royal York.
Gladwell, known for books such as The Tipping Point and Blink, will be recognized as part of the annual CJF Tribute, which honours a Canadian media luminary who has made an impact on the international stage.
The annual CJF Awards is a celebration of excellence in journalism, attracting more than 600 journalists, media executives, academics and business leaders. This year's event will also celebrate The Canadian Journalism Foundation's 25th anniversary and pay tribute to CJF founder Eric Jackman.
Hosts from Canada's three major networks are among those attending: Peter Mansbridge, chief correspondent and anchor of CBC News: The National, will host the event. Dawna Friesen, anchor and executive editor of Global National, and Lisa LaFlamme, chief anchor and senior editor of CTV National News, will be among the guests.
A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Michel Auger, the longtime crime reporter with Le Journal de Montréal. Auger is best known for his exposés of organized crime, including the violent rivalry among motorcycle gangs in Quebec in the 1990s. He managed to survive six shots to his back in a parking lot across from the newspaper's office.
The winner of the inaugural CJF Innovation Award, recognizing a breakthrough impact in advancing the quality of journalism, will be announced the same evening.
Other awards to be presented include the Excellence in Journalism Award – in two categories: large media and small media – the CJF Aboriginal Journalism Fellowships, The Landsberg Award, the Greg Clark Award, the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, the William Southam Journalism Fellowships, the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy and the Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
To support CJF programs, an online ad auction of prime space in major media outlets is now open. Space in The Globe and Mail, Maclean's, Metro and the Toronto Star are available for bids. The auction closes at 9:00 p.m. on Awards night, with the successful bidders announced later that evening.
