
Candidates Increasingly Turning to Hidden Job Market to Secure Employment

One fifth of job seekers believe the hidden job market is employers deliberately withholding advertising job vacancies to the public
Savvy job seekers are increasingly utilizing the hidden job market in their quest to find a job with 79% of candidates aware that career opportunities exist within companies who would consider recruiting internally or creating a role for a unique candidate who approaches them. 21% of candidates incorrectly perceive the hidden job market as employers deliberately not acknowledging potential vacancies in their companies to the general public. According to a survey conducted by FindEmployment, the majority of applicants (37%) believe the best way to approach opportunities in the hidden job market is by identifying companies they would like to work for and sending their CV. Three in every 10 candidates prefer to present themselves personally and request an interview to showcase the talent, research and solutions they could bring to the company. Researching the company's strengths, weaknesses and competitors in depth was favoured by a quarter of job seekers to try to gain a position with a company they liked. Networking via industry professional associations as a method of securing employment came last with 14% of the vote.
Existing employees moving up the career ladder were believed to utilize the opportunities in the hidden job market best at 36%. A quarter of unemployed job seekers are believed to be embracing applying for unadvertised roles with companies, while Graduates identifying their first job (22%) were perceived to be ahead of Executives searching for their next role (17%).
Further findings of the survey were:
- 4 in 10 candidates have not yet applied for a role that has not been publicly advertised
- 55% of job seekers definitely plan on using this job search technique in the future
