Carnegie Council Workshop for Ethics in Business, February 18 - Global Jobs Update: Assessing the Quality and Pace of Recovery
NEW YORK, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- There is a growing social crisis, afflicting 210 million people worldwide, that has been lost in the bail-out of financial institutions. Massive job losses, underemployment, stagnant wages, and disappearing lines of credit are quickly eroding economic stability, constraining growth and increasing hardships on individuals and families everywhere.
In recognition of World Day of Social Justice (February 20) established by the UN to promote concrete action on poverty eradication and productive employment, the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are holding a special event entitled, "Global Jobs Update: Assessing the Quality and Pace of Recovery."
The theme of the event reflects the growing recognition that the quality and pace of job creation will be a major political flash point in 2010 and the urgent need for an economic rescue plan to assist working families and the real economy that delivers decent jobs.
As part of Carnegie Council's Workshops for Ethics in Business series, this event will take place on February 18, 2010, in New York City at 3-5 pm EST. It is open to the public and members of the press. There will also be a live video webcast and the video, audio, and transcript will be posted later on the Carnegie Council website. To attend the event, registration is required. For complete details, go to http://www.cceia.org/calendar/data/0177.html
The panel -- with representatives from business, academia, and the ILO -- will address the issues of global economic recovery and the state of job growth worldwide. They will provide insight into the policies that have been implemented to address this multi-faceted crisis, assess the prospects for a political backlash, and present proposals for further actions that could generate decent jobs.
The speakers include:
David Arkless, Manpower Inc.'s President of Corporate and Government Affairs. Mr. Arkless is a world-renowned expert on labor market trends and has widespread experience of helping countries to develop their labor market strategies.
David Denoon, Professor of Politics and Economics at New York University. Dr. Denoon is the author and editor of seven books, including "Real Reciprocity: Balancing U.S. Economic and Security Policy in the Pacific Basin."
Raymond Torres, Director for the International Institute for Labour Studies at the International Labour Organization. Mr. Torres launched the "World of Work Report" (2009), the annual flagship publication of the Institute.
The panel will be moderated by Carnegie Council's Devin Stewart, Senior Fellow and Program Director of Global Policy Innovations.
The Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (www.cceia.org), established in 1914 by Andrew Carnegie, is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing understanding of the relationship between ethics and international affairs.
