Carriers Expand Telematics Use, Integrate Device Capabilities and Accessibility Elements to Enhance Mobile Experience

Progressive and GEICO Tie for First in Semi-Annual Mobile Insurance Scorecard

The competitive report benchmarks the mobile apps and mobile websites of the 12 largest U.S. auto and property insurance carriers, naming Progressive and GEICO as co-leaders in Overall Score for the mobile user experience. Allstate ties GEICO for the top mobile app, while Progressive once again ranks highest for mobile web.

Key Findings:

Expanded Telematics Use Assists Drivers and Carriers
The use of telematics solutions is being extended to support both policyholders and internal operations. Two-thirds of Scorecard carriers are now offering a telematics solution that includes accident detection, deploying emergency or roadside assistance as needed, and 25% now promote accident assistance capabilities to all their policyholders. This not only provides a valuable service to policyholders who do not have connected car services for emergency assistance but also will help expand the utilization of full telematics solutions. When an accident has been detected, 50% of carriers can launch a claim on behalf of a policyholder, with some evaluating the loss using the carrier's telematics data in conjunction with the vehicle's data to detail a claim event and diagnose damages and required repairs.

Integrated Mobile Device Capabilities Streamline Policyholder Tasks
Carriers are increasingly tapping device-native mobile capabilities to simplify data entry and make key policyholder tasks and documents readily accessible. To speed claims resolution, most carriers offer embedded mobile photo tools for assessing vehicle damage, and close to 60% permit policyholders to evaluate property damage using a device's camera. Scanning functions also save administrative time. Nearly half of carriers enable mobile apps to prefill a damage estimate tool using a VIN or license plate scan, and driver's license and VIN scanning is an emerging feature for driver changes or updates. To simplify premium payments or for purchasing a new policy, one-quarter of carriers enable digital wallet options like Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal to be used in one or both mobile modes, while one-third of carriers support claims payments to a digital wallet. Further, most carriers enable mobile wallet alternatives for storing ID cards, and Quick Action-style navigation is supported by 42% of carriers to help users directly access key insurance information or tasks on app login.

Promoting Mobile Accessibility Ensures Policyholder Support and ADA Compliance 
Attention to accessibility features such as larger text and sufficient contrast across carriers' mobile channels helps expand policyholder support and reduce ADA Title III compliance risk. While carriers are generally attentive to website and mobile web accessibility, less than half currently post a link to their Accessibility Policy in their mobile apps and just one-third provide a digital contact alternative that can be used to report app accessibility issues. As well, Apple has recently enabled accessibility details to be included in App Store profiles, yet fewer than 20% of carriers have added this information.
