Chesapeake Urology Associates in Maryland Offers Free Prostate Cancer Screenings at Baltimore African American Churches
Screenings in Partnership with ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer
OWINGS MILLS, Md. and BALTIMORE, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA) will be providing 11 FREE prostate cancer Baltimore screening events in partnership with ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer and Monumental City Medical Society as part of its 2010 Great Prostate Cancer Challenge® (GPCC) program. In its third year, the GPCC screening program has provided more than 2,200 free prostate cancer screenings in Maryland to men in need and hopes to screen 1,500 men this year through the program. The GPCC media partners providing support are WJZ-TV and Radio One.
More than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. Yet with early detection of this disease, it is one of the more treatable forms of cancer. African American men are 60 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer and at higher risk of discovering their disease at a later stage, when it is less likely to be curable. Men across the Baltimore area, especially those age 40 and older, are encouraged to receive a free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test to determine their status regarding this serious men's health issue.

The 2010 free screenings began in May and will be taking place through October. They are being conducted in ZERO's mobile medical van, designed specifically for prostate cancer testing. Men will receive a two-part early detection procedure, which consists of a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a physical examination.
Screenings are made possible by funds raised from the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge (GPCC) 5K Run and contribution program. The 4th Annual GPCC 5K Run will take place Sunday, September 26, at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. The GPCC, which was created by CUA, raises funds for prostate cancer research and free prostate cancer screenings.
