China, India and Indonesia Hold Strongest Opportunities for Smart Water Meter Vendors, Finds Frost & Sullivan
Need to reduce water loss, lessen distribution inefficiencies, and improve water treatment and sanitation facilities drives adoption
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Looming threats to the water industry may necessitate the strong adoption of smart water grid solutions in Asia-Pacific (APAC). Faced with water scarcity, aging infrastructure, population growth, urbanisation and climate change issues, the region will increasingly adopt smart water meters (SWMs) that capture, monitor and analyse data to increase the efficiency of water utilities and reduce operational expenditure. The use of SWMs also reduces non-revenue water (NRW) losses caused by leakage, unauthorised consumption and poor monitoring.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Opportunity Analysis for Smart Water Metering in Asia-Pacific (http://www.frost.com/p885), finds that the growth of the SWM market varies considerably across countries in APAC. The study groups countries on the basis of several general macroeconomic metrics. Group 1 consists of Australia, Japan and Singapore; group 2 is made up of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand; and China and India form group 3. Of these countries, China, India and Indonesia will provide long-term opportunities and the best prospects for the SWM market. Japan, Australia and Singapore, where SWMs are mainly used to reduce physical water loss due to aging water infrastructure, will also be worthwhile markets for vendors.

"As people in group 1 countries have 100 percent access to water and sanitation, SWM market opportunities will lie in the retrofitting of old water utilities," explained Frost & Sullivan Environment & Building Technologies Research Manager Melvin Leong. "In group 2 countries, however, there is a dire need to improve water treatment and sanitation facilities using SWM solutions. Likewise, group 3 countries strongly require smart meter infrastructure, considering the lower availability of water for people, especially in rural areas."
However, significant capital is crucial for the replacement or repair of aging infrastructure. When infrastructure needs to be restored, capital requirements are spread across decades presenting a continuous financial challenge as opposed to a one-time challenge. Cost is therefore the topmost concern for water utilities contemplating SWM implementation.
"Moreover, with insufficient documentation of the widespread benefits of SWM implementation, market participants will find it an uphill task to convince water utilities to adopt these solutions on a large scale," pointed out fellow Environment & Building Technologies Industry Analyst Eunkyung Shin. "As such, regulations and policy amendments by government bodies will be the biggest influencers for adoption of SWM solutions."
