City Colleges Chancellor Cheryl Hyman Invited to the White House to Participate in First Community Colleges Summit
CHICAGO, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl L. Hyman has been invited by the White House to attend the first-ever Summit on Community Colleges happening October 5th in Washington, D.C. The Summit will be chaired by Dr. Jill Biden.
President Obama asked Dr. Biden, wife for Vice President Joe Biden, to convene this event to highlight the critical role that community colleges play in developing America's workforce and reaching the nation's educational goals.
At the Summit, Chancellor Hyman will join with other community college presidents from across the country, in addition to business and philanthropy heads, federal and state policy leaders, and students to discuss how community colleges can help meet the job training and education needs of the nation's evolving workforce, as well as the critical role these institutions play in achieving the President's goal to lead the world with the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.
"I'm very much looking forward to attending the Summit, and the opportunity to discuss and contribute what we're doing here at the City Colleges of Chicago to create a world-class institution," says Chancellor Hyman. "This is a chance to share our vision with leaders from around the country and in doing so, bring the tremendous value of community colleges to national attention."
The Oct. 5th Summit will also encourage Americans from across the country to submit their thoughts, questions and challenges for discussion as part of the dialogue at the event. The White House has set up a number of ways for the public to participate online at whitehouse.gov/communitycollege. Community College students in particular are asked to submit their stories about how community college has changed their lives.
Community colleges are the largest and fastest growing segment of America's higher education system, enrolling more than eight million students per year. Last year, President Obama proposed the American Graduation initiative to usher in a series of new innovations and reforms to expand and strengthen opportunities at America's community colleges.
