New facility will sit at North Henry Boulevard and Burke Street, providing residents with easy access to other downtown amenities and businesses
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a unanimous City Council vote at the September 29, 2026, Work Session, the City of Stockbridge announces the location for the first Stockbridge Recreation Center. The new facility will occupy a 6.123-acre site at North Henry Boulevard and Burke Street, providing residents with a dedicated space for community-based wellness and learning.
"Our residents told us they want a community center where they can connect and focus on their health and wellness," said Shawn Edmonson, City Manager. "We look forward to making this a reality at a brand-new facility at 140 Burke Street that will serve every generation of Stockbridge residents."
The site was analyzed prior to selection, with its connection to Downtown Stockbridge and the VyStar Amphitheater at The Bridge noted as key attributes. The site also has the potential for walkable event connections and shared parking between the recreation center and local businesses, fostering more connection and economic opportunities in the downtown area. The parcel also offers room for future growth and connectivity to nearby trails.
"Locating the rec center in a central part of the city that is accessible for residents and supports the surrounding area was critical in our site selection," added Edmonson. "The parcel at North Henry and Burke is ideal given its proximity to so many of our other wonderful services and businesses."
Community input to date has emphasized the need for an accessible facility to house recreation and wellness activities, as well as learning and creative programs that bring people of all ages together. While planning is still in progress, initial plans for the rec center may include aquatics, sports, art and mentoring programs, STEM and computer spaces, and various activities and programming for youth and seniors. City staff will return to elected leadership with site designs and a community engagement plan, and a request-for-proposals process for design work will follow. Additional public meetings will be scheduled as planning continues.
